Jesse had an exceptionally hard time maintaining a job. In truth, because of his inactivity and lack of incentive, he was out of work far more often than he was in a state of employment. And when he did get a job, he had a hard time getting to work in a timely manner, he usually received poor performance evaluations, and he called off sick so frequently that he usually got fired four or five weeks after he began working. Not surprisingly, one of the consequences of Jesse’s less than positive work history was the fact that he was virtually penniless from day-to-day.
Despite Jesse’s terrible employment track record and financial negligence, however, somehow, someway he made it his business to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner most of the time.
So it came as no big shock when Jesse got arrested for a third DUI. When he went before the court, the judge clearly stated to Jesse that his alcohol-related behavior was terrible and, consequently, he was going to sentence Jesse to spend twelve months in the county jail.
Time In Jail To Reflect On The Destructive Consequences of Excessive and Hazardous Drinking
During his time while locked up in jail, Jesse was required to learn more about alcohol facts, about the harmful effects of excessive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol counseling. The judge underlined the fact that unless Jesse gets professional alcohol treatment and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will quite possibly be spending more than a short amount of time locked up.
Jesse articulated that he grasped what the judge was proclaiming but he still asserted that incarceration was not the most productive decision. The judge saw things from an entirely different vantage point and claimed that it was his professional responsibility to keep alcohol dependent individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who get multiple DWIs. To corroborate this perspective, the magistrate articulated some long-standing, thoroughly researched alcohol statistics that underscored some of the injurious consequences that are associated with irresponsible and excessive drinking.
Although Jesse understood that he drank a great deal, he never believed that he was alcohol dependent. So it was a big bombshell when Jesse began experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms about eight hours after going to jail.
To deal with his symptoms of alcohol withdrawal in a safe manner, Jesse was life flighted to a drug and alcohol treatment hospital for alcohol detoxification and then returned to the city jail. While locked up in the municipal jail Jesse was given alcohol counseling but due to the fact that he got this therapy as something that was imposed upon him, he was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his hazardous and irresponsible drinking.
When his time in the county jail was finished, the magistrate without uncertainty told Jesse that he would be under close observation and would be required to take periodic random breathalyzer alcohol tests.
Jessie’s Hazardous Drinking Stops Him From Living in a Mature and Effective Manner
After hearing how Jesse did not take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he halfheartedly followed the counseling protocol while in the municipal jail, the judge knew that it was basically a matter of time before he would be seeing Jesse once again in court about his excessive and abusive drinking behavior. As the judge thought about Jesse’s circumstance, he couldn’t help but think about how some individuals never use their intellect and learn how to live in an effective and responsible manner.
An Old Relationship Motivates and Inspires Jesse to Thoroughly Alter His Life
But something happened in Jesse’s life that significantly changed his injurious lifestyle. One day when he was at the store buying chewing tobacco, he met Alice, a girl he hadn’t seen since the seventh grade. After exchanging pleasantries, Alice candidly told Jesse that due to her alcohol and drug dependency she was lucky to be alive.
When Jesse asked her what happened that changed her life in such a positive manner, she told Jesse that when her cousin Linda died from drug poisoning, this help her see the injurious and dreadful life she had been living.
She stressed the point that the first thing she did after her cousin’s death was to start going back to the church she attended when she was in elementary school. That was fourteen years ago and with the support, help, and guidance of her preacher and other people who went to her church, she started going to Alcoholics Anonymous and she also got alcohol and drug counseling at the local drug and alcohol treatment facility. Alice told Jesse that despite a couple of tough times, she is finally on the path to long lasting recovery and feeling a sense of bliss and happiness for the first time since she graduated from high school. When Jesse said “yes” to Alice’s invitation to go to her church she was pleasantly surprised. After going to roughly seven or eight sermons, for the first time since he was a young adult, Jesse started thinking that perhaps there was hope for him and that he could at long last address his drug and alcohol issues and start living a more rewarding and beneficial life.
