It took many years but Emily finally made up her mind that she had enough with her husband’s harmful drinking. She was weary from seeing Barry come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending time with her and the kids. She was also drained from the second DWI Barry recently got. In addition she was fed up from creating excuses for her spouse when he couldn’t make it to work on time due to his problems with drinking. In a similar manner she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Barry's harmful drinking. And finally she was sick and tired of the unstable financial predicament into which he had placed his family due to his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.
When Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Productive About a Person’s Problem Drinking
One Wednesday afternoon when Emily was thinking about what she could do about her husband’s excessive and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something positive to cut into the damaging cycle of Barry’s abusive drinking behavior.
So she looked in the local yellow pages under “alcohol rehabilitation” and found scores of rehab centers that were all located less than twenty miles away from where she and her husband resided.
Due to the fact that she didn’t know too much about these rehabilitation facilities, she eventually decided that she needed to call some of them and ask a few questions. When she called each rehab facility she identified who she was and stated that her spouse was engaging in careless and excessive drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her spouse had an outstanding health insurance program at his place of employment and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol abuse treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health plan initiated the rehab.
At one treatment center, Emily was amazed that she was able to converse directly with a counselor who suggested that she come to the rehab center to discuss her husband’s excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior in more detail.
Emily Talks to a Psychologist About Her Husband’s Hazardous and Excessive Drinking
When Emily arrived at the rehab facility, she filled out some paperwork and then promptly got to see a counselor.
After listening to Emily go over her husband’s hazardous and abusive drinking, the therapist in a helpful but resolute manner told Emily how she may have played a major role in her husband’s abusive and unhealthy drinking through the years by covering for him instead of allowing him to suffer the results of his negative drinking behavior.
Emily Finds Out She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking
More to the point, the doctor told Emily that she may have been accidentally enabling Barry’s excessive and careless drinking behavior. The physician also emphasized the fact that while Emily could not control her husband’s behavior, with the encouragement and support of the treatment team at the treatment facility she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Barry’s careless drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the rehabilitation center so that he could go over his careless and abusive drinking behavior with a psychologist.
Fortunately after Emily revealed this to her husband, and he saw that she was serious, Barry told her that he had been extremely uneasy with his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior and that he was very pleased to discover that Emily wanted to do something affirmative about his hazardous and careless drinking behavior. As a consequence, he made an appointment to see a counselor at the local alcohol treatment facility.
Barry Agrees to See a Counselor About His Hazardous Drinking
While simply calling a rehab center does not ensure that an individual’s hazardous and excessive drinking behavior will become a non-issue or that one's warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one displays will simply vanish, scheduling an appointment is clearly a much needed factor in the treatment process. And due to the fact that Barry was serious about getting counseling for his abusive and careless drinking, the probability for a successful recovery was considerably enhanced.
