How Is It Possible To Overcome Drug Addiction?

by James Handforth on 2010/02/04

Drug addiction and alcoholism has become a nuisance for the society. It is very difficult to get rid of. It can be debated that it is very difficult for an addict to completely get rid of the habit. Although, by doing certain things and adopting certain methods, we can at least help the addict get out of this predicament.

Credit card is not a magic stick, through which we can purchase whatever we like within our credit limit. We forget very easily that we have to pay it back later on. It is just that we have to pay it lately, not on the spot.

The drug addiction can be controlled only by empowering the addict to take control of his own life. But how is it possible? It is difficult to answer. Human behaviour is very complex; we cannot control other persons, especially drug addicts, who become stubborn because of using the drugs. They are unwilling to change, and no matter how badly you want a good health and normal life for them, you cannot force them.

To help addicts, you first have to examine your own behaviour. You have to closely see if you are enabling them to continue using drugs; you might be unaware of it, and doing it in sympathy. A very common example is to bail an addict out of jail, if he is caught because of the drug use. The question is that how come this is a bad thing? Jail sentence is the natural consequence of the drug use, and when you protect an addict for the end results that he should go through, you are enabling him to carry on.

Another example is that you lend some money to drug addict even though you know he will use it to buy drugs. You have to make the drug addict realise that if he does not change his behaviour in the long run, he will have to face very bad consequences.

To overcome drug addiction, the second thing which could help an addict, is your encouragement to get professional help. Encourage him to join some treatment centre. The results of a treatment cannot be seen overnight, but it might be the break the addict was looking for to start a new life. Once the drug addict is ready for a treatment, you can suggest him different treatment centres and let him choose the one he likes to get his treatment from.

You must make the addict realise that you are his/her friend and that you want the best for him/her. Therefore, you would always be with him in every right thing that he would do. You must not give in to the demands of the addict, as he/she would use this to his advantage and manipulate the situation to continue using drugs.

It is not wise to buy something by paying extra on it, which you can purchase very easily on its actual price. Credit card is for our convenience; we should use it and never abuse it. Anyone who goes out and randomly purchases anything is actually following its impulses. It gives the impression that he does not have any control over his spending.

With so much advancement in technology, we see many innovative products in the market, which entice us to make the purchase at the spot. The consumer product companies market their products in such a way that we cannot resist buying them. We should keep in mind that even if we buy them now without really paying anything, we have to pay for it later on. Think intelligently when you are out to buy anything. If you know that you have weak impulses, you should give yourself some time to think if you badly need the thing or not. After giving yourself a little time, you will realize if you really need the product or not. It is better to think wisely and give yourself some time, than to repent later on. Build a budget by consulting with your family members, and request everyone to follow it. This is the only way to achieve financial independence.
