If you are a creative person, that's the fashion statement you want to make to the world. The last thing you want to do is wear designs somebody else has created. That's not being creative. If your intention is to stand out as unique, you'll have to come up with a unique approach to what you wear.
It's not that hard to stand out in a crowd, really. Wear a giro ski helmet downtown on a hot summer day and you are bound to attract stares. They just may not be the kinds of stares you want! If you can afford them, wearing the latest designer fashions will make you stand out, but only as someone who can afford to wear the best. That doesn't really reflect your unique personality.
Why is it important to you that you make a radical fashion statement? What inside of you is burning to express itself? It's a good guess that what you really want to do is express yourself through your art, in whatever form that takes. Maybe you've written a novel that you want to get published or you're an artist or a photographer who can't pursue your art as a career and has to work a regular, boring job.
Let's say for example that you're a painter who has finally got a gallery to exhibit your paintings. Your friends, co-workers, family and some random acquaintances are all coming to the opening, so you know you won't be embarrassed by an empty gallery. You also know that not one of them is going to buy a painting from you. Like it or not, you've got to get out there and generate some public interest in your show.
Artists tend to be introverted, but that's not going to sell your paintings. You can stick some flyers on billboards, but unless you do something bold and original, they won't be noticed. Why not make some wearable art and turn yourself into a walking billboard?
What else can you do? That old brown boot isn't going to do your image any good, but if you make a painting out of that and its mate, you've got something to attract attention. Combined with your helmet, you'll be covered with art from top to bottom!
Of course, you could also take the safe and conservative route and buy yourself some nice clothes and a trendy leather watch. Sure, they'll show that you have a good sense of style. They won't say much about your creativity, though. On the contrary, they'll just tell the world that you're like everybody else. Go ahead, be bold and original and wear your own art!
Whatever you do, don't follow the advice of this article to the letter. If you're really creative, then you'll think of your own brilliant fashion statement. Why not give it a shot? If you fall on your face, you've always got your nine-to-five to go back to!
